It's true! I'm leaving blogger and converting to wordpress. I've already converted everything over (including all your comments) and I'm in the process of fixing everything up over there, so it's not looking too pretty at the moment, but I'm really excited about having my own domain!

This is such a cool idea! Save your logo are asking people to invest in the conservation of the animals represented in their logos. Lacoste are already on board!

I've been trying to think of more logos with animals in them. All these animals may not be in need of conservation, but maybe they could help out with an animal of the same species.

European Design Hall of fame - Adrian Frutiger

Adrian Frutiger has become the third person inducted into the European Design Hall of Fame (Javier Mariscal and Erik Spiekermann are the other two winners). He wasn't able to attend the ceremony, but you can see a recorded message from him to the community.

Univers and Frutiger created by Adrian Frutiger (interesting sidenote - Frederic Goudy was the first to name a typeface after himself!).

Irish Museum of Modern Art - Project

This was a little project I set up for myself one day when I had nothing better to do. I was browsing the IMMA website and the whole design struck me as being very un-modern. I decided then to make a new logo for the museum, and maybe try to make a quick site redesign while I was at it.

This is the old logo, the first one taken from the header of the site. I played around with the eye image, trying to make it more interesting but I really wasn't feeling it. Because I was technically the client on this one, I wrote it out of the brief :P

I decided to just use the letters "IMMA". For a bit more interest I added a wavy line to some of the applications. When I made the line, I got a little excited thinking about it being used in motion graphics. For me, it brought the whole thing together.

As for the colours, I went with green and pink. The green representing Irish-ness, the pink was from the websites favicon - which is a pink feather.

Eyes, fingerprints, feathers!? You see now why I felt they needed a redesign :P

For the logo I was largely inspired by the simplicity of the MoMA NY and San Fransisco. They were two logos I always liked.

I spent a lot of time designing the logo and a few applications, and a little less effort on the site. I realize the design may be a little restricting of the content but I feel the design is an improvment on the sites current layout. I just think theres too much there at the moment. Theres four different menus on the homepage, I tried to trim it down to two (the footer menu isn't in the above image).

My favourite part is the business card, I'm really happy with how it turned out. If it were printed I'd probably want some gloss details on the logo on the back of the card.

Objectfied

I went to see it last night at the IFI in Temple Bar with a post screening Q&A with Gary Hustwit.

I'm not going to try to write a review a) because I'm not good at writing reviews and b) because Allan Chochinov has already written a really good one here. That pretty much sums up my feelings about it!

I really enjoyed it, my favourite part was anytime the Bouroullec brothers were on screen (which wasn't enough in my opinion!). Gary Hustwit revealed after the movie, the part we didn't see was every fifteen minutes they'd have huge fights where they would shout at each other, and then the next minutes be smoking cigarettes and talking calmly!

The most exciting part of the night for me was when he mentioned his next project. He didn't give any clues as to what it might be about but I can't wait to hear more! He talked about how he thought of Objectified as a follow up to Helvetica and how he's currently working on a third movie. He even went so far as to compare the three movies to Star Wars or Lord of the Rings!

I bought a poster after the show which was only €10 (available for $20 online) which seemed really resonable, and when I got it home and unrolled it, I realised it had been signed by Mr Hustwit himself!! Niiice :D

(I turned on the camera flash because without it the picture was just flat grey, when the poster is a really nice silver)

Dublin Bus Rebrand - Part 2

Some photos I took to expand on this post about the Dublin Bus rebrand. My photography skills are poor, and everything was so damn shiney! It seemed like I couldn't get any really good pictures.

Prepaid Smartcard. I really like this design. Below is the old design for the prepaid tickets.

This is the ticket you get when you pay on with change.

This is the old version of the previous ticket. The machine would just spit out a random length of ticket (the one pictured is about 7 inches long, but the next time you get the bus it could be a quater of the size). The new tickets are smaller and more consistant in size.

This is the old Nitelink ticket. Fug. You can see the old bus design here, but for the sake of your eyeballs I'd recommend you don't! It's just the above ticket printed huuuuge on the side of a bus.

I don't know if they've made any changes to the bus design itself. I hope they did.

I spent all weekend looking out for these adverts on the sides of the buses, and didn't see any for long enough to get a picture. The top one was taken when I was sitting on a bus outside the Blanchardstown Shopping centre, the bottom photo was taken from my boyfriends apartment window. Obscured by the tree is the logo with the new tagline "The Bus. Do you get it yet?".

So far so good :D I'm really a big fan of this rebrand and everytime I see a new application of it I get a little bit excited.

Studio on Fire and Bungie - Identity

Wow, I've been so busy lately! The weather has been so good that it didn't seem right to spend too much time indoors, hence the lack of blogging. So I'm going to have a few posts coming up about what I've been up to and I'm going to write about:

A very interesting Sweet Talk, with Alex Trochut, Ian Stevenson and Gaetan Billault. I even managed to get some (blurry) pictures.
A post about the screening of Objectified (which is tonight) with a post screening Q&A with Gary Hustwit himself!! Woo :D
Some more about the Dublin Bus rebrand. I've taken to the street to get some nice pictures of different applications of the identity.

I was at this event and they were giving out free prints of the posters designed by the three illustrators who spoke at it, and I really wanted to grab this one but by the time I got through the crowd they'd all been taken.

I don't mean to sound like a snitch, but people were totally breaking the one poster per-person rule. I can understand wanting to get one of each of the designs, but people were just grabbing three or four of the same poster! Ahh I'm just bitter I didn't get the one I wanted :P

It really shows how much I love Ros's style, that I was itching to get this poster even though I'm pretty sure I can't stand to look at Agyness Deyn's face for much longer.

Sizes may vary - Design Book

Damn I should have stuck this in my notebook post. I bought a copy of Sizes May Vary just before Christmas and I use it all the time! It's a sketchbook/reference book/notebook built for designers. It has pages and pages of templates for everything you might need, business cards, envelopes, CD's, Billboards, Bus Stops and lots more.

I'm a bit reluctant to draw into the book itself, because it doesn't feel right. All those years of teachers giving me shit for doodling all over my school books have really stuck with me. But luckily for me they've included a disc with all the content of the book, so I just print out pages whenever I want them! It's really handy.

It comes with a paper size chart, which I have hung up on my wall above my desk, and more size guides in the back.

Lotto Rebrand - Graphic Design

This is kind of old, but still a good one! I love the rebrand, I have a soft spot for a brand that uses lots of different logos really well, especially when you look at the previous mess of bad logos. It even won an Award.

I pretty much like everything about the logo. The font is fun - as is the color scheme. And the little star mascot is really well executed. The only thing I'd change would be the website - they've encorporated so much colour into the new identity, yet they've used one shade of green for the whole website. I can't help but think that it would look better with just a simple background colour change.

London Design Festival - Pentagram

New York Design Week has just ended, but this September London will be awash in the distinctive red and white of the London Design Festival. For the third year running Domenic Lippa has reprised his role as the art director of the festival, which is the umbrella organisation for London’s annual celebration of design. The Festival was announced by Festival Chairman Sir John Sorrell and Director Ben Evans at a launch last week at the V&A.
The theme of this year’s Festival is “Be Bold” and serves as a challenge by the Festival organisers that events be provocative, inspiring and unique. With designer Jeremy Kunze, Lippa has created the look and feel for the Festival. A feature of this year’s identity is the use of quotes from famous designers, including Pentagram co-founder Alan Fletcher (see the designer tote above).

Felix Lobelius - Graphic Designs

Some really awesome work from Mr Felix Lobelius who lives in Oz. The country, not the fictional prison.

I hate that they stopped making Oz, and also a bit pissed about what they did with Alverez at the end. He was one of my favourite characters! He also did the voice of Jackie in the Darkness computer game, which Mike Patton also worked on (he did the voice of The Darkness) I know Oz ended like 6 years ago, I should be over it, but I'm not. I heard that Kirk Acevedo guy got fired from Fringe too. Fringe sucks anyway.

Mike Patton also did the voices for the creatures in I am Legend, and for some mysterious reason gets credited on one of the GTA games (Vice City or the one before that)

I retain a lot of useless information, but always forget important things. Like putting in a link for Felix Lobelius's site!

Dublin Bus Rebrand - Part 1

I just wanted to make a little post about the Dubilin Bus rebrand which happened last year. I'm a big fan of it. My favourite part is what they've done with the Nitelink posters/signage. I couldn't find a lot of pictures (and living within walking distance of town means I never use the Nitelink anymore!) but it looks great. It's all set on a black background whereas the regular bus timetables/posters are white.

The only thing I'm not too fond of is the font. They've gone with Helvetica, which works really well - but just seems like a bit of a no brainer. It's a huge improvement over the old identity though, I don't like the CIE2000 font much at all!

I've heard that they're moving away from having a unified brand with Iarnród Éireann and Bus Éireann. Iarnród Eireann have retained their old logo (with the CIE2000 font) and Bus Éireann have jazzed up their logo.

These are the timetables which appear on the bus stops. The old one consisted of stickers which would often be peeled off - which was a pain in the ass. The new ones (below) are placed behind clear plastic.

These are the designs for the prepaid tickets. I'm going to try to get more pictures of the entire range because they come in lots of nice colors. Also, I need to add pictures of the tickets you get when you pay on the bus with change. The design of those is a lot better now.

I'll try and get more images of posters and other stuff, but right now I've only got what I was able to find on the internet. I'll get around to taking some better pictures - someday.

I give the new brand a high five on a scale of "Down with that sort of thing!" to "High Five".

The people behind the rebrand are ImageNow as far as I can tell. Their site doesn't seem to have anything about it.

Logolounge Logo design trends 2009

Logolounge have released their annual logo design trend list.

The hidden image logos are really nice. I actually saved the Gander Mountain one (red deer) a while ago, and didn't notice the duck and the fish in the antlers!

It's interesting to see that photographic logos are still appearing in the list, because it's so hard to get it right. I definitely think these ones have gotten it right!

Another photo logo I like is the new Swanswell logo (it was featured on BrandNew a few days ago.)

Weekly Orgainizer - Project

This is a personal project I've been working on. I wanted a weekly orgainizer. My mind instantly went to filofaxes, but they are so expensive so I crossed that off.

After shopping around I couldn't find any I liked so I decided I'd have a go at designing my own! This is what I came up with.

You fill in the date in the appropriate month box (like 18-24) then go ahead and plan your week!

The areas with the patterns are designed for sketching and scribbling in, because even if those areas were left blank I'd probably end up scribbling there anyway.

I have a folder that I use all of the time, so I'm just going to punch holes in these and stick them in there. Pretty clever, I know!

Also, bread for POWER!
